La Casita is so good. Our experience in Brunswick this evening was perfect from the moment we arrived. Service was breezy and friendly, the courtyard was cool with nicely spaced seating and the menu had the perfect amount of options to get us excited. The meal started with the oyster ceviche, a nice variation on the usual fish/prawn/scallop numbers we're more accustomed to; it was nicely acidic with a touch of bittersweet, the creaminess of the oysters worked really well in bringing all the flavours together, I'd have liked an element that brought a bit of crunch to the dish but it was delicious. A Tommy's Margarita was our opener from the bar, stiff and maybe a bit bitter but so good paired with our next snack. Our next starter, their "jalapeo popper", was a flavour bomb! Locally produced, perfectly ripe, spicy jalapeos stuffed with the juiciest sausagey mincemeat and soft white cheese... the peppers were roasted, served sweating out their hot tasty juices that were greedily slurped up off the plate! On to the tacos. The tortillas at La Casita are perfect. Slightly warmed, fresh corn tortillas that leave your fingers perfumed with the sweetness of the bashed and blitzed corn. Perfect thickness, a trusty vessel for the delicious fillings loaded up on them. We chose fish, lamb & pork. The fish, grilled snapper, was cooked evenly so the fish was tender but firm and joined on the tortilla by an avocado salsa and a light sour cream. We dripped the house salsa verde all over these and the result was epic. The next taco was a sexy succulent hunk of lamb cooked under hot coals, dripping with flavour served with a small bowl of it's juices in the side. This was my favourite. So much taste... The Astrid Mexican Lager from Yulli's is a great foil for any dish on the menu too.I felt like writing a respectfully detailed account of our night at La Casita as further thanks to Astrid (whom we'd never met before) and her team for making our night. We really enjoyed everything about the meal; relaxed vibes, delicious food, importance of ingredient, good drinks, genuine hospitality... I look forward to returning for more of the same.
Went there yesterday for lunch . Before we ordered the waitress put in front of us a nachos and guoc dish, welcoming us and stating that the time wait for food was lengthy and would we like to order some food? Free nachos? Turned out No. Was added to our bill even though we didnt order or request it. Torta and tacos very small portions, bland and pricy. Cucumber and mint drink missing and mint. Watermellon and lime drink didnt have watermelon.Disappointed and definitely wont return.
A very small amount of food for a very hefty price tag. Melbourne glam comes to Brunswick Heads once again by the duo that produced Fleet. But it's glam that would be better left elsewhere. I get Fleet, its unique to the area, a one off kind of experience, but really, do we need a restaurant in Bruns that provides only ok food with a hefty price tag? I ordered a starter as my main, it sounded exotic, cactus pan (I think that's what it was) with beans and jalapeno's. What I got looked and tasted like a side plate of refried beans with some chopped up pickled jalapeno's on top. There was a small amount of a stringy milky white substance (maybe cactus pan?) swirled through the refried beans and what looked like cottage cheese (but tasted like nothing), on top. The salad was the clincher though. We got a plate with a few coriander leaves ( I hope you like coriander because it's well know that people either love it or hate it) tossed with some radish and dragon fruit on a plate that took about 3 mouthfuls to consume. There was not a lettuce, spinach, or rocket leaf in sight. I get trendy, but really? When ordering my friend asked if we should order more than one salad between the 4 of us or would 1 be enough. The reply was "I think you should probably order 2, the salad normally feeds 2-3". There was no way that plate of coriander, radish and dragon fruit would have served 3 people. And as my friend put it post consuming the "salad" "where were the pumpkin pips?" And please don't ask me what a pumpkin pip is, there was meant to be some in our "salads" but we didn't see them. The fish tacos were also tried with the response that the ones we've been getting in Byron for the past 10 years are better and tastier. Being a local, I'm always up for trying the latest new place and because I love Mexican food I definitely wanted to try it, but I won't be back, we'll make the trip into Byron for our Mexican fix until we can actually return to Mexico, where, we had the world's best street tacos for 75c each. My recommendation, if you've got to try it because it's the "new" place to try, have dinner before you go, take lots of cash and enjoy the cocktails because the 4 of us left disappointed and still hungry after paying $220 for not much at all. I gave two stars because I did enjoy the margarita.
